Gov. Malloy Announces Amazon to Create Large-Scale Distribution Center and Add 1,800 New Jobs in North Haven
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that Amazon – the largest internet-based retailer in the world – has decided to expand its presence in Connecticut with the creation of a new state-of-the-art, 855,000 square-foot fulfillment center in North Haven. The company plans to spend $255 million on the project, where it will create 1,800 jobs at the new facility. The company, which recently opened a fulfillment center in Windsor and a sorting center in Wallingford, currently employs approximately 2,000 people in Connecticut. With the addition of the North Haven facility, that number will increase to approximately 3,800 Connecticut-based employees.

Gov. Malloy Directs Flags to Half-Staff in Honor of Sonar Technician 3rd Class Ngoc T. Truong Huynh
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he is directing U.S. and state flags in Connecticut to fly at half-staff beginning immediately in honor of U.S. Navy Sonar Technician 3rd Class Ngoc T. Truong Huynh of Oakville, who was among those who died on board the U.S.S. Fitzgerald in a collision in Japan.

Gov. Malloy and Congressional Delegation Announce $3.1 Million Federal Grant for Connecticut’s Efforts to Combat the Opioid Crisis Among Youth
Governor Dannel P. Malloy and the members of Connecticut’s Congressional delegation today announced that the state is receiving a $3.1 million federal grant to expand efforts combating the prescription opioid crisis, particularly helping to provide youth and their families access to long-term substance use treatment that focuses on recovery.

Gov. Malloy Announces Jordan Scheff to Serve as Acting Commissioner of the Department of Developmental Services
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that Jordan A. Scheff of Vernon, who currently serves as Deputy Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS), will temporarily serve in the position of Acting Commissioner of the agency while a search is being conducted to permanently fill the role.

Gov. Malloy Announces Launch of Public-Private Partnership to Help Hospitality Employees Identify Warning Signs of Human Trafficking
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the State of Connecticut, in partnership with certain private organizations, has teamed up to provide a series of training programs for employees in the state’s hospitality industry that will help them identify possible warning signs of human trafficking in their establishments and how to respond if they are concerned a person may be trafficked. Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery in which traffickers compel victims to engage in commercial sex acts or labor services against their will.

Gov. Malloy Announces That Due to Unprecedented Housing Efforts, State is Able to Match Every Chronically Homeless Individual to Permanent Housing
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that with the state’s significantly increased housing efforts over the last few years and focused strategies to end homelessness, the State of Connecticut has reached new record levels and is able to connect every chronically homeless person in the state with permanent housing. Gov. Malloy Proposes Legislative Package to Further the State’s Efforts Combating Opioid Addiction and Overdoses
Governor Dannel P. Malloy – in his first legislative proposals of the 2017 session – today unveiled a package of statutory reforms he is proposing that focus on efforts to reduce the potential for people to become addicted to opioid medications that could cause a life-threatening overdose. The proposals build upon a series of reforms the Governor has signed into law on the issue since 2011.

Gov. Malloy and Conn. Airport Authority Announce Spirit Airlines Coming to Bradley International Airport

Malloy and officials from the Connecticut Airport Authority (CAA) today announced that Spirit Airlines, an ultra-low cost carrier, will launch operations at Bradley International Airport beginning this spring, offering direct, nonstop service to several destinations, including Myrtle Beach, Orlando, and Ft. Lauderdale.

Gov. Malloy Announces New Haven Line Set All-Time Ridership Record During 2016
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the New Haven commuter rail line saw ridership grow during 2016 with a total of 40.5 million passenger trips during the year – surpassing last year’s total by approximately 20,000 and setting an all-time record, according to newly released data from Metro-North Railroad. The New Haven Line remains the busiest commuter rail line in America.

Gov. Malloy Announces Proposal to Support Local Insurance Industry, Keep Jobs in Connecticut
Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that the state budget proposal he will release next week will include a reduction in the tax rate on insurance premiums – dropping from the current rate of 1.75 percent down to 1.5 percent. The Governor explained lowering this tax rate will continue the state’s efforts to improve the business climate for insurers located across Connecticut, which account for more than 58,000 jobs in the state.
